When a wound fails to progress toward healing, it becomes chronic. Chronic wounds occur in all patient populations and cause significant pain and disability for affected individuals. They are also a major economic burden. Unfortunately, wound management is one of the few areas where little reduction in incidence has been seen in recent years, demonstrating that new approaches to prevention remain critically important. This chapter addresses the development and application of smart technologies in primary wound prevention and secondary wound care. Smart wound management technology as a primary prevention tool will make it possible to sense wound formation before clinical appearance, enabling proactive prevention strategies to be implemented. Smart wound care technology will enable concurrent monitoring of wound status and adaptive delivery of wound treatment. The future of wound care will be revolutionized by the application of smart technology to prevent, treat, and monitor chronic wounds.
